History of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University

Al-Farabi Kazakh National University was initially named after S.M.Kirov. Later in the year 1991, the name was changed and kept after Abu Nasir Al-Farabi. He was a great scientist, thinker, and scholar. He was the second teacher at the university.

In 1934 when Al-Farabi Kazakh National University was established, courses in four faculties have introduced the Faculties of Biology, Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry. In 1937, the courses in the Faculty of Humanities– the Faculty of Foreign Languages were introduced. A year later courses in the Faculty of Philology. In May 1941, as a result of joining the University of the Kazakh Communist Institute of Journalism courses in the Faculty of Journalism were introduced.

At Al Farabi Kazakh National University, in August 1947, courses in the Faculty of Geography were introduced, and in 1949 courses in the faculties of Philosophy and Economics. As a result of the joining of Alma-Ata institute of law in 1955, courses the Faculty of Law was introduced.

Al-Farabi Kazakh National University is a city in itself. Since more than 5000 students are resident in the 14 hostels provided by the university. A total area of 81,000 square meters is covered by the hostels. All the hostel buildings are located inside the main campus. The hostels are comfortable and provided with all modern facilities. A special body of the student government called “The Supreme Council of the student hostels” is present to resolve any problems occurring to the students living in students hostels. They organize activities and procedures for the settling of students in hostels. In Al-Farabi Kazakh National University hostels and campuses WI-FI network facilities are applied. Along with the hostels, facility for high-grade education and leisure namely beautiful sports center with a gym, sports fields. The hostels are surrounded by educational, welfare, health, shopping, and entertainment services for students. The hostels also consist of private cinema. A net of reading rooms and a powerful library that provides students with the necessary educational literature, an internet café with 300 seats is situated beside the hostel buildings.

Hostels are equipped with surveillance cameras. The recording is done on each floor and is controlled by guards working in the hostels. At the entrances to the hostel residents pass through the electronic badge. From 23.00 h to 6.00 h the security is on duty on the territory of hostels.
